Old the painting away from you- it’s hard to see the dots from afar, that is what Seurat wanted. His idea was to let our eyes blend the colours, instead of mixing them on a palette. He thought this made everything look brighter. Seurat laced his dots carefully, using contrasting colours to make different areas stand out. The figures look almost like cutouts. There’s a lot of action, but everything seems still, as if someone has pressed paused on a movie. This gives us the feel of a relaxing Sunday after noon.
